Help & FAQ

How to use the PDF Editor

How to edit a PDF

  1. Choose a PDF. Every page appears below the toolbar.
  2. Edit text (selected by default): click any line, type, press Enter.
  3. Pictures: click one to Replace or Remove it, or use Add image to place a new one.
  4. Add text, Sign, Draw, Highlight, Box and Erase add things on top of the page.
  5. Use the buttons above each page to move it, rotate it or delete it.
  6. Press Save PDF. Your original file isn't changed.

Shortcuts

  • Enter finishes editing a line.
  • Ctrl + Z (⌘ + Z on Mac) undoes.
  • Delete removes something you added and selected with Move.

Good to know

  • Scanned pages are pictures, so their text can't be edited — use Erase and Add text instead.
  • Edited lines are written as single lines; very long replacements may run past the original line.
  • Interactive form fields aren't filled; type on top of them with Add text.
  • Password-protected PDFs need to be unlocked first.

Can I change the text that's already in my PDF?

Yes. With Edit text selected, click any line and type. Use the small bar above the line for bold, italic, font, size and colour. Clear a line to delete it. When you save, the old words are covered with the page's background colour and your new words are written in their place.

Will the edited text look exactly like the original?

Very close, but not always identical. Edited lines use the nearest standard font (Helvetica, Times or Courier) in the same size, weight and colour. Lines you don't touch stay exactly as they were.

Can I replace or remove a picture in the PDF?

Yes. In Edit text mode, click a picture and choose Replace or Remove. Replace fits your new image into the same space. Add image places a new picture anywhere you click.

Is removed content really gone?

It's covered, not deleted from the file. Someone with PDF tools could still find the original text underneath. For confidential information, use a dedicated redaction tool.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The PDF is opened, edited and saved by your browser. Your file, your edits and your signature never reach SomethingTools.

Which characters can I type?

English and Western European letters, including accents (ä, ö, é) and common symbols (€, –, “ ”, •). Characters outside that set, such as Cyrillic, Bengali, Chinese or emoji, are replaced with a question mark when saving.
