How to use the Discount Calculator
How to use the discount calculator
- Choose what you know: the percentage off, both prices, or the sale price and percentage.
- Enter the numbers. Leave the extra discount empty unless a second offer applies, such as a coupon code on sale items.
- Read the price you pay, the amount you save and the effective total discount.
Formulas
- Sale price = original × (1 − discount ÷ 100)
- Stacked discounts: sale price = original × (1 − d₁ ÷ 100) × (1 − d₂ ÷ 100)
- Percentage off = (original − sale) ÷ original × 100
- Original price = sale ÷ (1 − discount ÷ 100)
Amounts are rounded to two decimal places for display. The calculator does not assume any currency.
Examples
- A 79.99 jacket at 25% off costs 59.99 — you save 20.00.
- A sofa reduced from 1,200 to 899 is 25.08% off.
- Shoes that cost 45 after a 40% discount were originally 75.
Is 20% off plus an extra 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. The extra 10% is taken from the already reduced price, so the total is 28% off. On a 100 item you pay 72, not 70.
How do I work out the percentage off from two prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price and multiply by 100. From 120 to 90 is 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25% off.
Does this include sales tax or VAT?
No. It works on whatever prices you enter. If tax is added at checkout, use the percentage calculator's "Add / subtract %" mode on the final price.
