Help & FAQ
How to use the PDF Converter
What you can do
- Images → PDF: combine JPG, PNG, WebP or other images into one PDF, one image per page, on A4, Letter or image-sized pages.
- PDF → Images: save every page, or chosen pages, as JPG or PNG at screen, standard or print resolution.
- Merge PDFs: join several PDFs in the order you choose.
- Split PDF: pull out page ranges as separate files, or split every page into its own PDF.
- PDF → Text: copy the text out of a PDF or save it as a .txt file.
Need to add text, a signature or a highlight, or rotate, delete or reorder pages? Use the PDF Editor.
How to use the PDF converter
- Pick a conversion from the tabs.
- Choose your file or files, or drag them onto the box. Reorder files with the arrows where order matters.
- Adjust the options, then convert. Results with several files are bundled into a single .zip download.
How it works
Rendering and text extraction use Mozilla's pdf.js, the engine behind Firefox's built-in PDF viewer. Building, merging and splitting PDFs uses pdf-lib, running in a background thread so the page stays responsive. Merging and splitting copy pages exactly — text stays selectable and quality is unchanged.
Limitations
- PDF to Word, Excel or PowerPoint isn't supported, because it can't be done accurately in a browser.
- Scanned PDFs have no extractable text (no OCR).
- Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first.
- Interactive form fields and digital signatures may not carry over when merging or splitting.
- Converting very large PDFs to 300 dpi images needs a lot of memory. On a phone, convert a page range at a time.
Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?
No. Conversion, merging and splitting run inside your browser using open-source libraries (pdf.js and pdf-lib). Your files never reach SomethingTools, and nothing is stored after you close the page.
Can I convert a PDF to Word or Excel?
Not yet. Rebuilding editable Word or Excel layouts reliably needs heavy server-side software, which would mean uploading your file. You can extract the text with PDF → Text and paste it into your document instead.
Why is no text found in my PDF?
Scanned documents are pictures of pages, not text. Reading them requires OCR (optical character recognition), which this tool doesn't do yet.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
No. Open the PDF in your reader with the password, save an unprotected copy, and use that copy here.
Is there a size limit?
Each PDF can be up to 100 MB, and merges up to 200 MB in total. Very large or image-heavy files can be slow on phones, because all the work is done by your device.
